I’ve been through it before, I’ve seen it before all around me – that restless, shifting time before an expansion where everyone starts to ask ‘what’s the point?’.
It started in Trade chat maybe three months ago on Saurfang. Anyone trying to sell a big ticket item like the hilt would find themselves the victim of multiple replies baiting with “what’s the point of spending gold on that? it will be outdated in three months!” And they are right in that items will be outdated, but the whole game works like that in a sense. Everything we equip ourselves with will become ‘outdated’ at some point, but lets instead say ‘upgraded’ as it’s much more positive 😉 Jokes aside, part of why we play is to progress our characters and 3 months of use out of an items could be pretty good value.
How much effort you want to expend on ‘upgrades’ is a personal choice; but as ‘three months to go’ becomes two, then one… the band of what’s worth while becomes narrower and narrower for us all.
Surprisingly, I’ve only really started to feel my “what’s the point” malaise kick in now, with a week to go. I log in, do my fishing and cooking dailies in Stormwind, hope for a few heroics with guildies, then log over to an alt. But even levelling an alt is now feeling like a time-filler. The new low level areas are great but I know that any lowby will be gently set aside for my druid once Cataclysm hits, and eventually then for my worgen hunter. So the motivation is just not there.
I’d like to farm myself 4000 Justice points so I can buy myself a few level 85 blues, but as I’m only half way there with a week to go, that’s chain heroics. And chain pugging is draining. AND I always get Oculus first. (seriously!) I’d also like to farm more Gilneas rep, (revered so far) but I know that will wait, and with no mount there’s no huge impetus there either.
So I’m listless. Maybe I should just log on for our last two raid nights, and take a WoW break for the next week, ready to enjoy it when it’s all fresh and new again 🙂
Are you experiencing the same restlessness? When did it start? How are you handling it?

Having recently dipped into the WoW community on twitter, I’ve found lots of knowledgeable and articulate gamers out there sharing their wisdom. A couple of thought provoking articles I’ve read in the last week:
A post about Guild Forums with some interesting questions to ponder from Bible of Dreams:
Murloc Parliament has some amazing articles, but this (combined with the comments that follow) really got me thinking. Great discussion:

Standing in Stormwind wondering what to do with myself, and I see someone wander past with a huge hound pet. HUGE hound. I follow the poor guy nonchalantly and discover it’s called a ‘Tracking hound’ and has the <Player’s guardian> tag. Hmmmm…
Over to wowhead and I find that Houndmaster Loksey’s hound whistle has had a makeover; it’s now a trinket with a 10 minute cooldown, and the pet itself lasts 10 minutes. Woo! Permanent hound!.. off to Scarlet Monastery I go.
Of course, it doesn’t take long and my location is noticed. Shigeko asks why on EARTH I am in Scarlet Monastery library, and so I explain. (Repeated mentions of a HUGE hound convince him I’m not insane. Well, perhaps not.)
So after obtaining my hound, Shigeko and I do a little research on other pet-like additions in 4.0.3a (ok to be honest, he does the research, I was already parading around with my new doggy friend).
Four new pets, currently available in 4.0.3a:
- Withers. I have this little guy on my newly minted mage I’m levelling. Available from Darkshore quests. need to go out and get him for Glow.
- Tiny flamelfy. Glowberry has this cutie now, available from Burning Steppes quests. (I’ve never managed to farm the Zangarmarsh firefly on Glowberry, so this is a nice addition to her companions)
- Singing Sunflower: available from the Plants v Zombies mini game in Hillsbrad. (Glowberry went out to get this first, I love PvZ and the pet randomly sings bits from the theme song. Very cute)
- Mr Grubbles. The finest in understated elegance. A worm pet that somersaults, available from Eastern Plaguelands quests/farming. Possibly my favourite; who can say no to a backflipping maggot?!
Glow is also currently exploring the new world and working on her Gilneas rep; hopefully farming herself 4k justice points before December 7 so that she can buy a few nice blue items at level 85. More about her heroic farming in another post.
Edit: I should mention that my new hound died within 30 seconds of entering his first heroic. As he’s a guardian and not a non-combat pet, he does take damage from AOE etc. Also, after his 10 min are up, Shigeko reports that he dies HORRIBLY, witha terrible whimper, and feet in the air. Dog lovers beware!

I’ve decided (finally) to start blogging some of my thoughts/theories/experiences playing World of Warcraft. Most of this will centre around playing my restoration druid (Glowberry) but as I have a handful of alternate characters I play, I’ll probably blog about these as well.Basically my poor GM was getting walls of text every time I wanted to discuss something. So perhaps blogging about all of this will help me avoid inflicting my rants on others 🙂
For more information about Glow, and my history in playing WoW (and druids specifically) visit the About Glow page. For more info about the mods and ui setup I use (including screenshots) check out Mods and UI.
I’ll flesh these out as we go 🙂
